Trusting yourself might be a good place to start 2024…

A Wiseman once told me that I’d know what to do when the time comes…. and I thought – I sure hope he’s right. He is, whatever happens I have no choice really, I’d have to do something, take some action. The question is; is that something the right thing to do? How do you know?
Well you don’t, not with absolute certainty anyway, but you can trust yourself. For any given situation presented to you, good or bad whatever you think it is, you have a decision to make. You might come out fighting, you might hide or cower in a corner – Lord knows that would be great sometimes, but the answer is usually somewhere in the middle. You can’t do nothing and you can’t assume anyone else will do it for you.
Don’t Panic, Trust yourself
Being calm is important, it allows you to see the actions to take. Being practiced at being calm is good however that skill can be practiced over time you don’t need it to begin. First you must trust yourself. Trust that you would indeed know what to do, as the man said, when the time comes.
If you can at least attain a baseline of trusting yourself, a true feeling of – ‘no matter what happens, I will just deal with it’. Then you’ll find you can take a load of worry off and park it.
Competence
Trusting yourself is not the end. It’s the beginning. You can’t ride a horse just because you trust yourself but you can certainly get up on one and practice.
Step 1. Internalise the mantra – Whatever happens, I’ll know what to do.
Step 2. When the time comes. Don’t panic. Remain calm.
Over time you can build your competence doing that basic things well, practicing calm, taking actions that you now trust yourself with. Over time you can then truly be trusted by yourself and therefore be truly trusted by others. Along the way as you screw up and make the wrong choice remember – it’s just a ride! Go back to the 2 steps and continue. Every time you fall of the horse you’ll be that little bit more competent a rider the next time.
